Start your Fashion Magazine Cover and Adjustments. The assignment is listed below:

You will create a magazine cover page using your best Fashion picture. You will also create a eight-picture photo spread that details what your subject is wearing. Before I give you some tutorial examples, here and here are some example covers. Click on the images to get ideas for your cover.

Before you start your cover, you need to edit and adjust your pictures to make them look professional. Here is a list of adjustment methods we did last semester:

If you do not remember how to do these adjustments feel free to use the Photoshop book at the front of the room. Take your time. You have a few days to adjust your pictures and make your cover and picture spread. The bottom line is this: get rid of blemishes, tone down hot spots or glare, soften the skin, adjust colors for emphasis, use black and white (greyscale) if necessary, crop for effect, and play around with brightness/contrast etc.

Fashion Magazine Assignment

You are working for a fashion magazine that sells clothing to a specific audience. Your job together is to shoot two picture spreads to sell two different styles of clothing and accessories. This includes pants, coats, shirts, scarfs, shoes, socks, belts, dresses, shorts, and anything else a person can wear.

Your pictures should show a variety of composition and also showcase a variety of ways to light your subject. Please review lighting techniques here.

You must choose a partner from class.
You will model for each other on Thursday and Tuesday.
You will shoot one day outdoors and one day in the studio.
Your location away from school needs to be unique and interesting on it's own.
Get creative. Play dress up. Dress stylishly and/or uniquely.


Please get together with your partner  and answer the following questions using Text Edit. This is due on Tuesday/Wednesday.

1. What are your names?
2. What two magazines are you shooting pictures for? Why? What types of clothing are you trying to sell?
3. What day are you using the studio?

2nd Period:
Please edit your best 10 Spring Quote pictures. You don't need to worry about adding text yet.

4th Period:
Please spend the entire period planning, designing, and brainstorming your Teen Magazine assignment.
Here is what is the due at the end of the period:
 Get a blank sheet of paper and design a rough draft of your magazine.
Please include: title of magazine, layout of pictures, headlines, and anything else that will make your magazine stand out.
Don't forget, Tuesday is a shooting day. You and your partners need to dress appropriately.

5th Period:
1. Make sure you have all of your stop motion pictures on your computer. Put all of these pictures into one folder on the desktop.
2. Open Final Cut Pro and create a new project
3. Select Final Cut Pro in the upper left hand corner and then select User Preferences. Change the Still Frame Duration in the upper left hand corner to 00:00:00:05. (Click here to see a detailed tutorial).

4. Go to File>Import and Select folder. Pick your Stop Motion pictures folder. The folder will show up in the Browser in the upper left hand corner.
5. Drag pictures into timeline as shown here. Lengthen, shorten, or delete clips as needed.
6. Import music and sound effects to Final Cut: File>Import>File Pick music and sounds that work for your video. We need sound throughout the entire animation.
7. If you have not used Final Cut before you need to watch this video in order to understand the layout.

Magazine publishers, editors, and circulation directors know the importance of the cover image as both a newsstand impulse buy and as a brand. 80 percent of consumer magazines’ newsstand sales are determined by what is shown on the cover, a fact that can mean the difference between a magazine’s success or failure over time. The cover image and design reinforce the brand, an important identification factor because the average reader spends only three to five seconds scanning a magazine cover before deciding whether to buy that issue. Magazine covers not only offer information about what’s inside a particular issue, they also provide significant cultural cues about social, political, economic, and medical trends. As both historical artifacts and marketing tools, magazine covers deserve closer study.

NOTE: Teen magazines are not tabloids... they should be positive by nature, not mean, slandering, etc.

Your Job

You need to design a magazine cover using Adobe PhotoShop and your own pictures. Your magazine cover can be based off of an existing magazine, for example use the layout and name of Teen magazine, but design your own photos, titles and story lines, or create your own magazine totally from scratch, around an interest you have. For example, create a magazine based on Rats, Shopping, a Boy/Girls Life in Middle School, or Fossils, etc.

You must have:

1. A background

2. A main cover photo (may have smaller photos to show other features included in the magazine)

3. A Title, with Unique text effects

4. Several story line titles

5. Issue date

6. Issue price & bar code

7. Minimum of 5 images taken by YOU


Your magazine cover will be graded on if you included the above elements and how you carry out Unity in your magazine cover.

_____Unity can be achieved by carrying out a common theme in the type styles, photos, story titles and descriptions. Do all the parts work together?

_____Think about readability, can you read the type against the background? Is the type style readable? Are the sentences too long? Are the titles descriptive enough to make you know what the article is about? Does the type size signify the importance?

_____Does the photo or photos support the theme? Does the photo catch your eye? Is it too busy or too simple?

_____How is your effort and craftsmanship? You will need to be selecting, cutting, pasting and cropping. Does your cover look professionally neat?

_____Layout, how did you arrange all the elements? Is the type all lined up flush left, right, centered? Is the type over the picture or a background? Did you add a banner with the issue date, web site, and cost? Does the layout make it easy to read or confusing?

Multimedia Music Video Assignment

Requirements:
Students will shoot a music video that is at least two minutes but no longer than three minutes.
Unlike music videos in my Video 1 class, I encourage you to make these videos as bizarre and weird as possible.
Some suggestions:

• Use the Green Screen
• Use Stop Motion Photography
• Move the camera rapidly from shot to shot, slow down for a second, and move again
• Use special effects and filtering in Final Cut 
• Use multiple props or costumes if people are in your video
• Reverse, speed up, and slow down clips
• Layer clips in Final Cut to create ghosting effects
• Use the motion tab keyframes in Final Cut to zoom and pan across the video 
• Use other programs like Flash or Photoshop as needed
•  Use pictures in addition to video

Students may work was many people as they want, but everyone must edit their own version of the video to their own Garageband created song.

Students must turn in a one-page typed treatment.

1. What is your story or concept in great detail? What makes this idea interesting?  Don't forget costumes, editing and shooting style etc. Your answer should be 4-5 sentences.
2. Who are you working with on this project (inside or outside of class) if anyone?
3. When will you shoot? You can shoot all period Thursday and you may also shoot outside of class.
4. Do you have your own video camera or cell phone camera?

You should have 10-12 SUCCESSFUL panning style pictures using shutter speeds of around 1/20-1/60 and then 10-12 pictures of regular fast shutter speeds (usually 1/500-1/2500).

Suggested activities to shoot: someone running across the field, someone doing back handsprings or other gymnastic moves, anyone playing catch with a football or baseball, and hackysack etc.

Garageband Assignment #1

• Create a full-length song in Garageband that is 2-3 mins long – (to view time go to Control –> Show Time in LCD)
• The song should work for a specific genre of music as opposed to just random clips assembled together. For example, you should create a rock, country, or electronic song.
• The song should have distinctly different parts of the song (parts that are emphasized or de-emphasized or repeated).  "Real" music has verse, middle, and chorus sections.
• The song must contain at least 6 different tracks. Most songs will have have more than six sections.
• You should include at least one sample, voice, or musical instrument
• At least 2 of the tracks must change volume multiple times throughout the song – click on the downward pointing arrow at the end of the track icons to make a track’s volumne fade in or out
• At least one track must include a segment that loops – usually created by clicking in the upper left corner of a region and dragging to the right.

Photo Essays tell stories with pictures in ways that words cannot. They show us the faces of joy, pain, pride and fear.

One famous photo essayist was Larry Burrows. Burrows was killed in a helicopter crash in Vietnam but his work helped show the face of war to Americans.

Assignment - Photo Essay (Part 1)

In this assignment you will create your own photo essay. To help prepare you for this you should review some other photo essays and prepare a report.

Select a photo essay from the Time.com web site.

Select one essay and to review it. You will need to respond to these points in a word processing program like Text Edit:

1. Did the photographer use staged photos, candid photos or both?
2. Color or B&W? Did it make a difference? What factors contributed to the selection of one over the other?
3. Find examples of good framing and composition and point them out. How close do the subjects feel in the photo?
4. Find examples of good use of color and light. Do you see backlighting? Were the photos taken early or late in the day?
   
5. How much narration and text support the essay?
6. Do the photos in the essay stand alone or do they need to be seen as a part of the whole?

HDR Assignment

HDR

This is a new assignment for some of you and for others it's something you have done before. There are detailed instructions on how to create HDR pictures below.

I'll give you some hints:
1. Use a tripod or something else completely steady.
 2. Take 8-10 pictures using a variety of shutter speeds from almost dark to too bright. (Adjusting aperture only works also). Please use the snow, sun, landscape, action, firework, and beach settings etc. if you are using a camera that cannot manually adjust
3. Make sure tripod is completely steady.
4. Import pictures and put all the HDR pictures in a folder on the desktop
5 Merge pics in Photoshop using automate>merge>HDR

You should take 40-50 pictures from one awesome scenic location. This translates to five or six HDR merges. Note: review all 8-10 of your shots before changing angles.

In the instructions above they suggest you change your shutter speed (I have successfully created HDR merges with aperture adjustment). I will recommend you try both. You CAN take HDR pictures using a point and shoot camera. Instead of adjusting the aperture you can try different settings for each picture like Beach, Snow, Clouds, and Sun etc.

Each of these pictures is actually three pictures combined, each with a different aperture setting.

Magazine 2 Adjustments

Use Photoshop to adjust your best six Magazine pictures.
Turn in your best six pictures on a Contact Sheet called Magazine 2_adjusted.
Please make sure you pick six pictures of a variety of subjects shot from a variety of locations and angles.
You should have at least one landscape, close-up, and action/activity picture.

Spend time on each picture making sure the exposure and color balance is correct.
These pictures should get people excited about visiting the city you chose.
 
Finally, turn in your best picture for printing by itself called Best Magazine.

Steps for B-Movie Poster
1. Brainstorm and sketch ideas on paper.
2. Spend time to get any background/landscape pictures that you need. Pick a place that you could potentially have monsters climb on/destroy/reappear from/or live. Your poster must have at least one digital image taken with a camera.
3. Import your background photos to your computer.
4. Create a new document in Photoshop at 8*10  inches with 200 resolution.
5. Add background photo to new document.
6. Manipulate photos to work within your poster. Use free transform to adjust sizes. Hold down the shift key to constrain proportions. Don't forget you need victims and a monster.
7.  Pick a text to create that is appropriate for your poster. Text with blood, fire, or multiple colors also seem to work best. You will make text for your movie name as well as tag-lines and movie stars. The text should go well together.
8. Once you have completed all of your poster you will need to merge layers and convert your picture to grayscale.
9. You will now paint your picture at approximately 23%-30% opacity. Pick colors that stand out.


Grading will be based on the following:
Creative movie title
Creative use of text effects for title and tag lines
Interesting/scary monster or villian
Use of digital image
Color Coordination
Realism of poster (does it look like something we would see in a theater)
Logo included
Movie details included in small print (directed by,starring, rating etc.)

Edit Your Shoreline Magazine Pictures

Today you will edit 20 of your landscape pictures in the following manner:

• Two Selective Focus
• Two One Item Kept in Color with the History Brush
• Two Vivid Color or High Saturation
• Two Black and White/Grayscale
• Two Vignette
• 10 Instagram

Please  create a Contact Sheet with all 20 pictures named Shoreline Adjusted and turn it in to the Classes/Period 2 folder on the server.
 Please make sure the picture adjustment name is saved under each picture in the contact sheet.

Homework:

• Take (literally) a few hundred pictures in the city of your choice. 
• Sell me this city via your pictures. Make me move there! Please try to get to six or seven locations within this city.
• Shoot landscape, portrait, action, macro, and abstract shots.
• Shoreline and Lake Forest Park are not options for this assignment.
• You will turn in at least three contact sheets when you return from break.

2. Why did you choose this as your theme? What is interesting about this theme? Be specific. 2-3 sentences
3. What type of locations will you choose to shoot your pictures? Why? Keep in mind that you will need to leave campus and most likely leave Shoreline. Please give three or four examples.
4. What type of pictures do you hope to take? Action, portrait, landscape etc? A good photo essay will have a variety. Give me some specific examples and how they relate to your theme. Yes, I want you to attempt to describe pictures you haven't even taken yet. Visualize...
5. What kind of composition will you focus on in your pictures? You will need at least five composition elements (not counting rule-of-thirds). Yes, again I want to know what you are attempting before you shoot. What will you try that you haven't done before?
5b. How will your pictures convey emotion, either from your subject or from the viewer of the pictures? Why will an audience really enjoy these pictures?
6. How much work will be done at school and how much away from school?
7. If you don't have a car, how will you make sure you get to your locations? Can your parents help? How about public transit?
8. This project should showcase everything you have learned in Digital Photography. How will you ensure this happens? What Photoshop adjustment techniques will you use? Please give three or four examples.
9. Is there anything you are unclear about in terms of composition or shot styles and angles etc? This is the time to ask.

Digital Photo: The Final Project

Photo Eassy Requirements:

• First pick a general theme. For example, you might pick America, Democracy, or Responsibility. You will shoot photographs centered on this central theme. This may include camera experimentation like shutter speeds, HDR, aperture adjustments, or photomerges.

• Use what you've learned about photographic composition, lighting, color, lines, texture and use your camera to make a statement. Each individual photo will be graded accordingly. It is imperative you showcase your ability to shoot many angles of shots with many levels of camera composition (Review composition elements and types of shots if necessary).

• Your photographs should make both a visual and emotional/political/critical/intellectual statement. Your photo essay should contain at least 9 photographs. Below each picture you will also describe the composition elements used on each photo, what you did to adjust the picture, the photo settings used, why you picked this picture, and where you took the picture.

• Your photo essay should be something unique, new, and your own view of your selected theme.

A one-page reflection is also required. In this paper you need describe what you learned during your project. What did you learn about your subject, Photoshop, and photography in general. What was easy and difficult about your project? What would you do differently if you did it again? Finally, how far along do you think you have come as a photographer this semester?

• You can shoot B & W, Color, or both. It’s your artistic choice.

• You may digitally alter your photos as necessary in Photoshop. You should use all of the landscape style, portrait style, and Instagram styles as needed.

• Your pictures should be printed out either 3*5 or 4*6, two to three pictures per page with the exception of one photo that will be printed at 8.5 *11.

• Projects should be turned in on poster board or in a binder with written with the written reflection attached. Look at examples at the front of the room.

• You will also be dropping this assignment in my drop box so that we may view each project in front of the class.
