Your Photomerge Assignment

Your assignment over the next five to six days:

You will create Photomerge pictures. These are 3-5 pictures that overlap to show a wide landscape or cityscape (one big picture).

Your three Photomerges should be taken at three different locations at three different times of day: sunrise, afternoon, and sunset.

Use a tripod if possible. Remember to manual adjust white balance or select something like "cloudy" or "sunny" on your camera.

SCNN Open Asignment for Animation Class

You are going to create an “Open” for SCNN.

Requirements:

• 20-30 seconds long
• motion tween
• shape tween
• sound effects,
• music
• at least 7 layers

Most importantly this video needs to get kids excited about watching SCNN. Use school colors if you can and even create school locations, teachers, students, clubs, and sports to make the video relevant to other SC students.

The name SCNN should appear at the end.

Videos are due on Wednesday at 9:00.

Digital Photo Grayscale Assignment

You will adjust approximately 25-30 pictures using the grayscale methods. When you are finished adjusting your pictures pick the top 8 and send them to me in a contact sheet. Please make sure you have at least one picture from each grayscale method. Name this assignment "grayscale_adjustments". (This is due Monday 20 minutes into the long period).

Adjust your pictures using the six methods we discussed in class.

The Grayscale Methods: Lightness Channel, Ansel Adams, Calculations, Duotone, Basic Channel Mixer, and Basic Black and White.

Make sure all pictures are cropped as needed, have a definitive subject, and have an extreme dark and light point. Proper photo composition is essential.

On Monday you will send me your best picture for printing. Drop this into the proper folder and call this "grayscale to print."

Your assignment today is to think of a great place or places to shoot (off-campus) at the end of the week that will enable you to shoot some great grayscale photos. Examples: a cemetary, a street with very old buildings or houses, a junkyard, a used car lot, a basement, or a dense forest.

• On Thursday/Friday you will leave campus to shoot 24 grayscale pictures focusing on outdoor shadows and patterns. Please arrange your ride via parent, friend, or bus BEFORE class time. You may sign out at the beginning of lunch.
• You will also shoot 24 pictures this weekend as well focusing on man-made shadows and patterns.
• On Monday you will learn Photoshop grayscale adjustment techniques in class.
• Next Tuesday/Wednesday you will also leave campus to shoot at least 24 pictures again.

• Due Monday: Landscape Contact Sheet Two. 24 pictures from two locations. These pics should knock my socks off.
• Due Tuesday and Wednesday: Six Landscapes adjusted in Photoshop on a contact sheet called" Landscapes Adjusted". Please make sure this is a jpeg Contact Sheet.Focus on colors, brightness/contrast, photo filters, clone stamping, sharpening, cropping, and exposure etc. Also, send in your best picture as a jpeg file called "Landscape to Print". Please use the naming convention. Any pictures not turned in with the naming convention will be trashed.

Today's assignment:
1. Shoot ten shots of someone standing and waving their arms. Adjust the shutter speed between each shot.
2. Shoot ten shots of someone standing and waving their arms and adjust both the shutter speed and the aperture (f-Stop number). Remember, the settings need to balance out. If you raise the shutter speed you will more than likely need to raise the f-stop number to and vice versa.
Try to get ten "good looking" shots with different manual settings.
3. Shoot ten more landscape type shots from the hills near the football and softball field. Adjust the camera settings manually between each shot.

Photo Homework: Landscape Pictures Due Monday

Your homework this weekend is to shoot landscape pictures.

You will shoot at least 24 pictures from at least two separate locations.
You may shoot horizontal and vertical landscape pictures.

Please do not center the horizon line and try to show something in the foreground, mid-ground, and background.

You will shoot and then turn in five pictures that showcase leading lines, five that show frame within a frame, and five that show either balance mass or tonal balance.

• Create a new folder on your desktop with your pictures.
• Open Photoshop CS3.
• Select File>Automate>Contact Sheet II
• Select on Folder and choose the folder your created.
• Make sure the image size is 8*10 inches.
• The resolution should be 300.
• Columns=4 and rows=5.
• Click OK.
• File>Save as a jpeg
  

Drop contacts shet into the STAFF server period 5/6 and make sure you use the naming convention. Contact sheets and other assignments without the naming convention will not be graded.

Photo Assignment for Tues/Wed

You will shoot at least 20 good images today.
Your focus will be the rule of thirds and color contrast.

Every shot should fill the picture frame.

When you return to class please import your photos into iPhoto. Next, create albums on the left that say rule of thirds and color contrast. Drag the pictures into these albums.

Finally, you will create a contact sheet in Photoshop so you can turn in your pictures.

Camera suggestions:
If you have not bought a camera yet, please purchase one with at least 4 megapixels. This will ensure that the pictures you take can be blown up to print at at least 8.5 *11. If you can afford a camera with more megapixels, by all means get it. A camera with a high optical zoom is nice. Digital zoom doesn't mean much so don't be mislead by a high digital zoom (I'll explain more in class).
I know Canon cameras better than any other brand and I highly recommend them, but if you end up with a Nikon or Olympus etc. you should be fine.
You should be able to find a decent camera at Fry's or Best Buy for as little as $150-$175. Some really great cameras can be found in the $300-$400 range.

Assignment Requirements:

• First pick a general theme. For example, you might pick America, Democracy, or Responsibility. You will shoot photographs centered on this central theme. This may include camera experimentation like shutter speeds or photomerges.

• Use what you've learned about photographic composition, lighting, color, lines, texture and use your camera to make a statement. Each individual photo will be graded accordingly. (Review composition elements if necessary).

• Your photographs should make both a visual and emotional/political/critical/intellectual statement. Your photo essay should contain at least 9 photographs. Below each picture you will also describe the composition elements used on each photo, what you did to adjust the picture, and where you took the picture.

• Your photo essay should be something unique, new, and your own view of your selected theme.

A one-page reflection is also required. In this paper you need describe what you learned during your project. What did you learn about your subject, Photoshop, and photography in general. What was easy and difficult about your project? What would you do differently if you did it again? Finally, how far along do you think you have come as a photographer this semester?


• You can shoot B & W, Color, or both. It’s your artistic choice.

Self-Portrait Assignment

You will shoot four different self-portraits over break. You need to pick four photo types from the following five categories.

1. A self-portrait where color is emphasized. Color may include wardrobe, location, props, or natural objects. Think of your picture as a one or two color concept picture.

2. A picture that emphasizes lighting and shadows. This will be a grayscale self-portrait.

3. A self-portrait that showcases your interests and hobbies. In this picture we learn what you like to do away from school. Think about what interests you and transfer that into a photo.

4. A fantasy self-portrait. Dress up and use costumes. In this self-portrait you can use Photoshop to enhance your picture in any way, shape, or form. Transfer yourself to Hawaii or become a Viking like you have always wanted.

5. The Supermodel self-portrait. Dress up like a GQ or Cosmopolitan magazine model. This can be a grayscale or color picture. You will use Photoshop to airbrush and enhance this photo.

HDR MERGE ASSIGNMENT

You will take a total of five sets of HDR pictures between today and Thursday/Friday. Each HDR Merege should have at least four different pictures.

You will have class time on Tuesday/Wednesday so please bring your cameras. The rest of the pictures will be taken on your own time. I would like everyone to get at least one sunset or sun rise picture.
I recommend adjusting the shutter speed only or using full manual mode when using my cameras.

When you use your own cameras to get HDR pictures please adjust the different pre-selected settings to change light. For example, you could select snow, beach, cloudy, and sunny to get four different amounts of light into your camera. (These pre-selected settings adjust the aperture and shutter speed for you automatically).

You will take 24 pictures over the weekend of November 7-9. Choose bizarre objects and shoot them at weird angles. Try to make the class guess what the pictures really are.

You will also have a shooting day on Wed the 12th (3rd period) and Thursday the 13th (6th period). During this time you will take 24 MORE abstract pictures off-campus. You may sign-out early if you need to.

For this next assignment I want you to throw out all of the "rules" we've discussed in class this semester. This is your chance to be as creative as possible.
